2nd Hour Civics Class with Jared Mathis (right)
Sep 27, 2023

The Lewistown High School Civics class, in conjunction with the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Post 5001, installed a new flagpole and flag at the Veterans Memorial located in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown.
The old steel pole had served its duty for many years and needed to be replaced.  After its removal, Mr. Matthew Peirce’s 2nd hour Civics class walked the new 30-foot aluminum pole from Lewistown High School to Oak Hill Cemetery. With the assistance of school maintenance employee Jared Mathis, the new pole was erected with a new solar light. The American flag, proudly carried by the group, was unfurled and attached to the new pole.  The class stood at attention with hands over their hearts as the flag was raised.
The Civics classes in Lewistown conduct service learning projects throughout the year.  In the past, they have undertaken projects such as raking leaves in front of the cemetery and around the Fulton County courthouse, packing Christmas packages for children in need around the world, and helping local organizations, such as the Lewistown Historical Society, clean and beautify local attractions.
The replacement of the flagpole was a wonderful project that was much needed.  We are grateful to Dan Sandman for the loan of the generator that provided the power necessary for us to complete our task. Thank you, Mr. Peirce and your 2nd hour class, for helping the VFW with the project!
